Is Creative mentoring for you?

Think of creativity more as a state of mind, rather than an activity. It is open minded, curious to learn, comfortable with being a beginner, more flexible in times of change, and generally interested in the world around us.

These sessions are designed to explore where you might be feeling something isn’t quite right in your life, and how this more creative approach could help you navigate those difficulties. Everyone is different, and the key to this way of working if figuring out what is right for you first. A typical session can include a combination of talking through the issue, or doing something creative and mindful that can help you understand the situation in a more implicit way. Creativity allows us to explore the subtleties, which is often where the most profound information sits.

The common thread is bringing together person centred theory, and creativity as a mindset. Here’s some of the ways it could help in every aspect of life >

  • Do you really struggle to stay motivated at work, and feel fe up with your job? Do you rarely feel any sense of excitement or awe in your day to day life?

Whether you work as a creative or not, feeling motivated and inspired is so important to living a full life. It shouldn’t be a constant state, but moments of joy should be making appearances on a regular basis.

Being stuck in a rut is nothing new, but instead of changing jobs, locations or something else more drastic, thinking more creatively about what is already there could shift this fog and help you feel more engaged.

  • Are you constantly promising this or that to yourself, but you never follow through? Do you feel a bit guilty or ashamed at your inability to change? Are you forever saying you’ll ditch your bad habits, but they always creep back in?

Changing is tough, but we also don’t always help ourselves. Our brains work in very strange ways, choosing what’s familiar and comfortable even if it’s not good for us. There is so much content out there telling us what to do, and the thing is, we already know - but we don’t do it.

In person centred theory, we start by really acknowledging where we are. We completely accept that, and instead of trying to change ‘that thing’, just be with it and observe. The strange paradox is, that when we start to accept things, they tend to more naturally change. Carl Rogers, the founder of person centred therapy, found this to be one of his main observations in his decades of work counselling others, and we’ve found it to be true too.

What you can do, is look at yourself with curiosity too - instead of beating yourself up, wonder why.

  • Do you have a great idea, then agonise over actioning it to the point it gets dismissed? Do you feel there are far more people out there doing something better than you could? Do you struggle to choose one idea, and stick with it?

Creating is a way to figure out who you are, and feel clearer about every facet of your being, from how you feel, to what you value and believe. If you suffer from imposter syndrome, or always feel like you should be doing what others are, getting back in touch with yourself is key.

We often listen to too many voices telling us who to be, and what to do. Social media can feel inspiring at first, and it might give you some great ideas. The problem is, there are millions of other ideas out there, and we can’t do everything. As we continue to scroll, our own ideas get lost in a sea of others.

By creating, we are tapping in to our unique perspective, and expressing ourselves from there. We can feel more authentic, and clear on what we want to do.

Slowly, you will feel less affected by what everyone else is doing, as you’re simply more interested in your own path, and more aligned with who you are.

  • Are you so afraid of failing, you don’t even start? Are you so focused on getting everything perfect, that you never finish anything? Do you see failure as something a skilled person would never do?

Trying to get things absolutely right is the death of creativity. Many great artists have to go through many ‘failures’ before they find their style, and the most unique ideas are often found when you least expect them.

Perfectionism is a very modern issue, with online profiles that show only the best of everything, we don’t always get to see what goes wrong.

Creativity asks us to embrace being a beginner again, to know that it’s really ok to get things wrong, and that is a very natural part of the learning process.

It can also highlight that sometimes, in those ‘mistakes’ you can also discover something new and different in yourself.

  • Do you often find yourself feeling a bit flat, and uninspired about life? Are you both anxious and exhausted?

If you’ve forgotten the last time you felt a gentle sense of awe creep up on you, or you feel like you’re always reaching for the next dopamine hit, you also probably feel a bit exhausted and overwhelmed too, and this is quickly followed by a desire to hide under a duvet!

Just like any drug, the more dopamine we get, the more we feel we need. In this cycle, nothing will ever be enough. In a world so full of stimulation and constant ‘entertainment’, we can sometimes detach from simple pleasures as we continue to search for more. Thinking creatively encourages us towards more presence and curiosity, that can help us slow down, and smell the roses again.

  • Are you terrified of conflict? Do you worry about upsetting others with your needs? Are you always avoiding speaking up, and therefore feel overlooked?

People pleasing and avoiding conflict are such a common problem, and it’s a problem that really spirals. The more you avoid the conflict, the more terrifying it can seem!

We can work with this in 2 ways - first we help you define your values, and what’s important to you. Second, we help you reframe conflict with curiosity. Instead of identifying a disagreement with others as a negative, can you instead be curious about their point of view, and ok with the difference.

Imagine if we were all the same? Difference and diversity makes the world a far more interesting place, and in fact, it sparks far more creativity than similarities.

  • Do you struggle to sit still, forever planning the next adventure? Do you feel a bit untethered, like you’re floating around with no direction?

In a world where we can work from anywhere, and we’re free to roam, we can feel a constant pull in every direction, and no clarity on where we should be. If we have the option of constant travel and adventure, why stay still?

Creativity might seem like a strange solution to this, as we can feel so inspired by travel and adventure. But the problem can arise when we can only feel inspired in new and exciting environments. That constant need for change can feel both exhausting, and intoxicating.

First we have to identify what you really want. Is it travel and adventure, or do you really crave stability and routine?

If it’s the latter, it can require a shift in perspective, to help you notice that sense of awe you feel on an adventure in your new life. We also start to observe the benefits in slowing down, and enjoying a life a bit more ordinary.

What is Person -Centred Theory?

The founder of the humanistic, person-centred approach to psychology gives a very brief description, but what we believe are the two key aspects of this theory. Acceptance (of yourself, and others) as being key to actually changing. and being congruent - being yourself, and knowing who that is. As a form of therapy it is both creative and human centred, but at it’s core it believes that every person is the only expert on themselves, a therapist can only help them in realising that. Your Creative Mentor

Amy has worked as a professional creative for over a decade, also creating her own businesses in the world of wellbeing, running yoga retreats, & opening a retreat venue in Sri Lanka. She has always been creative, and credits that mindset with helping her take calculated risks and go with her intuition. With that perspective, she was able to travel freely, working online and with clients all over the world.

In her personal life, she has taken her own journey with mental health and emotional wellbeing, that started as she turned 30. She quit her job and trained to be a yoga teacher in Bali. In a place that offered so many ways to explore self awareness, she started to feel that she wasn’t living life as she wanted to. For several years she explored what life she did want, at first embracing the freedom to roam. But despite the amazing experiences, deep down, something still didn’t feel quite right. As COVID hit, she was lucky enough to be living in Sri Lanka, and as the world slowed down she decided to commit to consistent therapy. After 3 years of Person Centred counselling, as she turned 40, she started to feel total clarity on who she was, and what she wanted, suddenly craving a more grounded and ordinary life.

Now living back in Manchester, she has created just that, and is now training to become a therapist herself. She aims to combine her own experiences of the benefits of the creative mindset with her professional training in Person Centred theory with one goal - to help people feel more peaceful and free. Both 121, and through her workshops and retreats, she guides others to explore their own creative mind.
